Group of student interns

Intern with SLOLAF to assist San Luis Obispo County residents in need.

Each quarter SLOLAF hosts a student intern in Civil Law Services. Our interns are usually from Cal Poly, however we are open to internships with students from other schools if scheduling fits. Interns should be at least in their second year in college and have an interest in law for their career aspirations. Strong written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and an interest in working with underserved populations are helpful.

The internship will take place in the SLOLAF office in San Luis Obispo. We ask our interns to commit to working 12 hours a week for 10 weeks. This can be done for school credit or on the student's own time. Our interns spend some time shadowing the attorneys and some time doing independent work. We have our interns sit in on phone calls, mediations, court proceedings, and trainings. We also have our interns conduct research, draft research memos, draft materials for pro se litigants, review and summarize case documents, interview clients for relevant information, follow up with clients to obtain requested records, etc. For any student who wants to get some hands-on experience and help the community, this is a great opportunity.

If you are interested in interning, please let us know which quarters you are interested in and submit a cover letter, resume, and a brief writing sample. Please note that we get many applications for student internships, but we can only supervise one intern each quarter. Given this, we can’t guarantee that everyone who applies for an internship will be accepted. If you are selected for an internship interview, we will contact you via email.
